General Care Tips

  • Keep the area clean and dry
  • Avoid baths, pools, and hot tubs for at least 1 week
  • You may shower after 24 hours, but gently pat the area dry
  • Do not leave gauze on the wound for over 24 hours unless directed

Wound Dressing Options

Your doctor will let you know which type of dressing was used for your procedure.

Tissue Adhesive (Dermabond®)

A medical glue called 2-octyl cyanoacrylate may be used instead of traditional gauze. It seals the wound without stitches and improves comfort and appearance.

Wrap Dressings

Wrapping the penis gently with gauze may reduce bleeding more than ointment alone. Remember not to leave gauze in place for more than 24 hours unless your doctor directs you to.

What's Normal After Surgery

Some changes around the wound are part of normal healing. It is normal to see:

  • Mild swelling and redness
  • A yellowish film (this is normal healing tissue)
  • Small amounts of blood or clear fluid

Cleaning the Area (Starting Day 2)

  1. Wash your hands before touching the area
  2. Rinse gently with warm water in the shower
  3. Pat dry with a clean towel
  4. Apply antibiotic ointment if directed
  5. Use clean gauze or leave open to air, based on your provider's instructions

Pain and Comfort

  • Use pain medication as prescribed
  • You may also take Tylenol or ibuprofen if your doctor approves
  • Apply an ice pack over your underwear (not directly on the skin) for 15 minutes at a time to reduce swelling

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I shower?

You may shower after 24 hours. Avoid baths, pools, and hot tubs for at least 1 week, and gently pat the area dry afterward rather than rubbing it.

Is a yellowish film on the wound an infection?

Not by itself — a thin yellowish film is usually normal healing tissue. Be concerned about pus, bad-smelling drainage, spreading redness after day 3, or fever, and call us if those occur.

Can I use ice for swelling?

Yes. Apply an ice pack over your underwear (never directly on the skin) for 15 minutes at a time to help reduce swelling.
