¿Qué es Optilume?
Optilume is a drug-coated balloon catheter that dilates urethral strictures while simultaneously delivering paclitaxel — a medication that inhibits scar tissue regrowth. Unlike traditional dilation or direct vision internal urethrotomy (DVIU), which often have high recurrence rates, Optilume targets the underlying biology of stricture formation.
The technology combines mechanical dilation (to widen the narrowed segment) with local drug delivery (to prevent re-scarring). This dual-action approach offers better long-term outcomes with minimal invasiveness.
¿Por qué Optilume frente a otros tratamientos?
Opciones tradicionales
- DVIU (cutting strictures): High recurrence rates, often 50-80% within 12 months.
- Urethroplasty (open surgery): Gold standard for long strictures, but requires incisions, tissue grafts, and longer recovery.
- Dilation alone: Temporary relief; strictures frequently return.
Ventajas óptimas
- Outpatient procedure — done at our ambulatory surgery center.
- Minimal downtime; most patients return to work in 1-2 days.
- Proven to reduce recurrence compared to DVIU.
- Preserves future surgical options if needed.
- Covered by most insurance plans, including Medicare.
¿Quién es un candidato?
Optilume is FDA-approved for patients with:
- Anterior urethral strictures (in the penile or bulbar urethra) up to 3 cm in length.
- Strictures resulting from prior instrumentation, catheterization, trauma, or inflammation.
- No prior urethroplasty or complex reconstructive surgery in the treatment area.
- Healthy surrounding tissue without active infection or fistula.
We evaluate each case with cystoscopy, retrograde urethrogram, or ultrasound to confirm stricture location, length, and severity before recommending Optilume.
